Witness in hoops trial claims he paid football players from Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, North Carolina, and Northwestern

. . . Marty Blazer, a Pittsburgh financial advisor -- turned government informant -- after pleading guilty to securities fraud charges, took the witness stand Tuesday in the college BASKETBALL fraud trial and levied some potentially explosive allegations against several college FOOTBALL programs [including that he paid players at Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, North Carolina, and Northwestern] . . . from $100 to $3,000 per month from 2000-2013/14, usually by cash, sometimes by Western Union.... The payments [] were aimed at convincing the player to remain in college and not enter the NFL draft in the hopes that they would retain him as their financial adviser when they did turn pro....

Blazer testified that — at the encouragement of an unnamed Penn State assistant — he paid $10,000 by check to the father of then-Penn State player Aaron Maybin to convince him to stay in school. (This allegedly occurred during the Joe Paterno era.)

NCAA Women's Basketball Division I National Championship

The Lady Irish of Notre Dame trailed the overall #1 seed Baylor Bears by 17 points when Baylor star Lauren Cox was felled by a knee injury with 1:22 left in the third quarter, allowing the Irish to come back and eventually take a 1-point lead. After some give-and-take, with but 3.9 seconds remaining, Baylor guard Chloe Jackson drove to the basket and gave the Bears a 2-point lead for what proved to be the winning score as last year's Irish hero Arike Ogunbowale was fouled but missed her first free throw attempt and then made the second when she should have purposely missed (after failing to convert the first). Thus, the Irish lost to Baylor 82-81 in another classic for women's basketball. The Irish finish the season with an overall record of 35-4.

The Irish rallied from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter after one for their stars, Arike Ogunbowale, managed to score only two points in the first half but got hot in the second half when she scored 21 of her total 23 points. On Sunday night, the Irish face the Baylor Bears at 5PM on ESPN to decide the NCAA Women's Basketball Division I National Champion. The Irish are currently 35-3 (overall) on the season.

Alliance of American Football

Per ESPN: "After eight weeks of games and less than one season into [the] Alliance of American Football's existence, league owner Tom Dundon has decided to suspend all operations, [per] league co-founder Bill Polian." Per a statement from Polian: "I am extremely disappointed to learn Tom Dundon has decided to suspend all football operations of the Alliance of American Football. When Mr. Dundon took over, it was the belief of my co-founder, Charlie Ebersol, and myself that we would finish the season, pay our creditors, and make the necessary adjustments to move forward in a manner that made economic sense for all.... The momentum generated by our players, coaches and football staff had us well positioned for future success. Regrettably, we will not have that opportunity."

NCAA Men's Basketball Division I - NIT Final Four

After leading by as many as 11 with 8:03 left, Wichita State turned inept by missing their final 10 shots and allowing their opponent to score the game’s final 14 points over the final three minutes, 25 seconds as the Shockers lost to the Lipscomb (Tennessee) Bisons on Tuesday, 71-64 in the semifinals of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) in New York. Wichita State finishes the season with an overall 22-15 record.

NCAA Women's Basketball Division I

The #1-Seed Lady Irish of Notre Dame overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to claim an 84-68 victory over #2-Seed Stanford in Monday's regional final in Chicago, thus securing the Irish a spot in the Final Four against near-perennial champion UConn. That game will be on Friday, April 5th, at 8 p.m. on ESPN2 in Tampa, Florida. As ESPN stated, "It's a rematch of last year's national semifinal, when the Irish upset the Huskies 91-89 in overtime on [Arike] Ogumbowale's buzzer-beating shot." Also per ESPN: "The [Irish Women] made history on Monday night, though it became barely a footnote. Notre Dame's starting five of [Arike] Ogunbowale, Jessica Shepard, Brianna Turner, Marina Mabrey and [Jackie] Young became the first group in NCAA history -- men or women -- to score 10,000 points. They now have 10,068." On an individual level, Ogunbowale, who had 21 points against Stanford, scored 55 points in two games, and was named the regional's MVP. Jackie Young was the lead scorer for the Irish on Monday with 25 points.

NCAA Men's Basketball Division I

The #4-seed Kansas Jayhawks were totally outclassed in their loss to the #5-Seed Auburn Tigers, 89-75, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. This past season for the Jayhawks saw their 14-year reign atop the Big 12 end, and seemed to be a succession of almosts-but-not-quites. The three biggest questions going forward for the Jayhawks involve: (a) possible NCAA sanctions being imposed on the team for the Silvio De Sousa Adidas scandal, (b) whether Coach Bill Self elects to stay at the helm or move on, and (c) whether KU is still an attractive destination for the young, short-term athletes elite NCAA Basketball is known for. This coming off-season will likely answer all three.

This is an interesting destination as the head coach of The Express is noted disciplinarian and former NFL star, Mike Singletary. Under Singletary, Manziel could wash out quickly or have the right mentor, environment, and opportunity he needs to turn his life and career around. We shall watch and await the results.
